Class 9
Term Definition
Audience The audience of web page is the intended group who will be reading the page. One should identify the audience of a page and then design the page in a way that is appealing to that audience. For example, a site for children in elementary school would probably have bright colors, many graphics, and vocabulary that is age-appropriate.
Home Page The home page is the main page for a web site. From the home page, one can click on links to other subpages that are arranged by topic. For example, www.unt.edu is the home page for University of North Texas.
Story Board Story boards are used in filmmaking, animation, web design, and the development of other types of media and are a series of visual representations of what the creator has envisioned for the final outcome of the project. A story board is like a visual outline for creating new material.
Accessiblity With regards to web page design, web designers need make sure that the content on their pages is accessible to people who have disabilities. For example, including a description of an image using the "alt" tag would allow someone who is visually impaired and who is using a screen reader to know what is there.
Web safe colors There are 216 colors that will display properly on any browser and on older computers.

Term Definition
Bitmap Bitmaps are a type of digital image files that can be displayed on a web page. Examples of bitmap file formats include GIF, PNG, and JPEG.
AVI AVI stands for Audio Video Interleaved file. It is a video file that can be displayed in a browser. This file format was introduced by Microsoft in 1992. This format will play on computers running Windows but does not always play on computers not running Windows.
MOV MOV is a video file developed by Apple which is used by Quicktime.
MP3 MP3 is a common type of digital audio file typically used by consumers for storing audio files and playing digital music. For example, I can purchase a song from Amazon in MP3 format and download it to my computer.
DRM DRM stands for digital rights management. Companies are using DRM programs in order to protect their copyright and ensure that their content is not being copied illegally.

Term Definition
ERIC ERIC stands for Education Resources Information Center. It is an online library sponsored by the Instituted of Education Sciences and the U.S. Department of Education.
Epaper Epaper is a type of technology that enables people to read books and other text in electronic form. The Amazon Kindle is an e-reader that uses e-paper technology.
Webring Webrings were used in the early days of the Internet to link web sites together that were on a similar subject. People had to click through the sites in order. Webrings are not commonly used today as search engines have become much more robust and sophisticated.
E-library An e-library provides users access to e-books, online databases, electronic journals, and other digital materials. For example, the UNT library has extensive resources available to students electronically in addition to the resources located at the physical library on campus.

Term Definition
HCI HCI stands for human-computer interaction. In an educational setting, it is important to understand how students interact with the computer and have programs that are designed in an intuitive way that best promotes learning.
Rubric A rubric provides a set of criteria for the evaluation of work. Rubrics are often used by teachers for evaluating students' work.
Functionality The design of a website will have a large effect on its functionality. The design needs to be clear, easy to read, and navigation between pages needs to be obvious. Also, all pages should link to each other, and you should be able to get to the home page by clicking on the banner or web page name.
COPPA COPPA stands for Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. This is a federal law regarding the collection of information by a website from children who are 13 or under.
